Employers urged to sign up for cancer centre wellness day

[dropcap type =”circle”]A[/dropcap] cancer support centre is hosting a Wellness Day in a bid to help businesses support staff who may have cancer or who are caring for someone with the condition.

Organised by The Hummingbird Centre, the event will take employers and employees through a series of workshops aimed at giving an insight into how they can help staff.

These include team building, hosted by Bicester Target and Equilore, a UCARE Cancer Awareness presentation and stress management, run by Amplified Group.

Hummingbird founder Mechelle Harris said: “Through our work at the Hummingbird Centre we know people want to return to work because it’s a way of returning some normality and stability to their lives. The aim of this course is to make employers aware of how they can support staff who either have cancer, or whom are caring for someone with cancer, take this step smoothly.

“People’s needs change through their cancer journey and they can often face difficult situations in both practical or personal ways. We feel, if an employer is able to understand a little more about challenges people have faced, or will face, it can go a long way to supporting their colleagues in workplaces.”

National cancer support charity Macmillan estimate 123,000 people of working age are diagnosed with cancer each year, and about 700,000 employees in the UK are caring for someone with cancer.

Registration for the Wellness Day is now open. It takes place at Stratton Court Barn, on Monday, June 24, from 9.30am.

It is open to employers and employees and the suggested minimum donation is £25 per person.

The Hummingbird Centre opened its doors in 2014 after a promise Mechelle made to her late father Raymond Hurcombe to create something good out of their loss as a family.

So far, The Hummingbird Centre has supported more than 16,500 people and has become very much part of the community. It relies 100 per cent on donations and volunteers to enable it to operate as every penny raised goes back into the centre.
