[dropcap type =”circle”]C[/dropcap]ancer support charity The Hummingbird Centre is urging people to back it through the new Cherwell Lottery.
Each week people can support the centre at the same time giving themselves a one-in-50 chance of winning a cash prize up to £25,000.
The new lottery is run by Cherwell District Council and was set up to help local good causes raise money. Local groups can apply to the council to become a ‘partner’ and will then receive 50 per cent of income from tickets sales bought by their supporters. Tickets cost £1 and the lottery will be drawn weekly.
Groups and charities get a dedicated page on the Cherwell Lottery website where residents can sign up to support their chosen organisation.
Mechelle Harris, founder of The Hummingbird Centre, said: “This is a fantastic way for people to raise money for us and at the same time they have a good chance of winning money as well.
“It’s really straight forward for people to take part, and a really easy way to help raise some of the £90,000 we need each year to keep this vital free service running.”
Cllr Andrew McHugh, Cherwell’s lead member for health and wellbeing, said: “We’ve had a fantastic take-up from local good causes since we first presented the lottery to them last month.
“The goal behind setting up a lottery is to create a new funding stream for the organisations that give so much back to our communities.”
Based in Launton, near Bicester, The Hummingbird Centre offers vital support to people from Bicester and surrounding area and their families. It relies 100 per cent on donations and volunteers to enable it to operate, so and every penny raised goes back into the centre.
It was set up in 2014 after a promise founder Mechelle Harris made to her late father Raymond Hurcombe to create something good out of their loss as a family.
So far, The Hummingbird Centre has supported more than 16,500 people across the Bicester and surrounding community.
