The Yurt at Nicholsons-a new venue for dining

[dropcap type=”circle”]N[/dropcap]icholsons Nurseries at North Aston have opened a new café venue in a yurt in the grounds of the tree and hedging centre.
Head chef Sonya Kidney has been busy exploring new flavours and ideas for dishes. Liz Nicholson said: “We are very excited to announce that our new Café is now open. Our yurt was made in Devon, hewn from skilfully steam bent ash timbers, sanded by hand and treated with oils for longevity. It has a fleece lining for winter and tough cotton canvas to keep out the British weather all year round.
“For many years, we have thought about offering more to our customers, somewhere to sit for an hour, a drink, lunch or some cake. Food outlooks and thinking about attitudes have changed and for us here at Nicholsons it is exciting and scary to be part of that change. We want to be inclusive, allergies and intolerances will challenge us to produce dishes suitable for everyone.”
There are no set recipes or menus. Sonya simply uses the best produce that is available and creates plates of fabulous food.
Among the dishes on offer are Potato and Horseradish Broth, Pan-fried Mackerel and Beetroot Relish, Glazed Rhubarb Brandy-snap Basket and Rhubarb Parfait.

Yurts have been a distinctive feature of life in Central Asia for at least three thousand years. In some of those cultures the word ‘Yurt’ simply means ‘Home’. Yurts were used by nomads to be able to move their homes with the grazing.
The Yurt at Nicholsons is open from Monday to Saturday 8.30am – 4.30pm.
