Dazzling sculptures bring winter wonderland to life

[dropcap type =”circle”]G[/dropcap]iant illuminated sculptures will transform Blenheim Palace into a winter wonderland with the launch of its all-new Christmas Light Trail tomorrow (Friday, November 25.)

More than a dozen metal sculptures have been installed around the landscaped grounds of the Oxfordshire stately home.

Teams of artists from across Europe have come together at the UNESCO World Heritage Site to create a spectacular new after-dark experience for visitors.

Over 500 individual light fittings, four kilometres of pea lights, nearly 30 kilometres of cable and no fewer than 400 separate fire sources have been used to light up the festive trail.

The result is a series of stunning outdoor attractions including a scented fire garden, dancing cascades, sparkling hedgerows, fairy-lit arbours, singing Christmas trees and a lake aglow with brightly-lit boats.

Blenheim Palace’s lakeside boathouse has also become a temporary home for Santa Claus as part of the hour-long illuminated festive discovery trail.

The event has been created by Zoe Bottrell, director of Northumberland-based Culture Creative, who invited a team of talented international artists to create illuminations inspired by Blenheim Palace.

Among those taking part are ‘And Now:’ who have built a scented living fire garden within the existing Rose Garden, Brighton-based light artists and sound designers ITHACA, who installed singing Christmas trees, and Light Works who have created the Fibreoptic Cascade and Fairy Woodland.

The French artistic studio TILT have designed 10-metre-tall light flower sculptures and actors from the Walking Theatre Company are providing interactive encounters and performances throughout the visit.
