[dropcap type =”circle”]T[/dropcap]he Hummingbird Centre in Launton has got big plans for next year and hopes to be able to extend its premises to provide even more facilities for local cancer patients and their families.
Launched in April 2014, the centre has already helped more than 500 people from the Bicester area, and with ambitious plans to add more facilities in 2017, founder Mechelle Harris hopes to be able to help even more people.
The centre in Station Road, Launton offers cancer sufferers and their families the chance to share experiences by talking to others in the same situation. Guests can also take part in regular art and craft sessions, indulge in beauty and well being treatments and talk to a team of volunteers who can help them cope better with their situation.
Mechelle, who founded the centre after losing her own father to cancer, said: “We are there to greet you from when you walk in the door to the time you decide to leave. We have areas where you are able to take time out, relax, be spoilt and be listened to by others who know and understand but will not judge you for how you are feeling.”
The overwhelming atmosphere at the Hummingbird Centre is one of laughter, fun and positivity. Guests support each other and the volunteers offer help, activities and guidance.
Carol, who has been visiting the centre for some time said: “Everyone is made very welcome here and we really do have a good laugh! The first time I walked through the door I was a wreck, but I left feeling calm. It really is a truly remarkable place. The volunteers are all fantastic and the craft sessions have really helped me cope with things.”
Claire who started coming to the centre 18 months ago added: “The Hummingbird Centre really has been a lifeline for me during my treatment. I have made friends here for life.”
Mechelle launched the project after her father made her promise to do something positive in his memory. She said: “It was my Dad’s wish so here we are! There is clearly a real need for the centre and we have been so lucky to have been given so much support from local businesses and organisations to help us continue. We work closely with GPs and hospitals but need £4,000 a month to keep the centre running so fund raising is also important.”
Angela started coming to the centre in May this year, she said: “The craft sessions really are fantastic and I have discovered that I actually really like being creative! It’s also really nice to come here and chat to people. I finished my chemotherapy a couple of weeks ago and I would encourage anyone in my position to come here.”
Tricia had breast cancer six years ago, and still pops into the centre. She added: “I would definitely encourage people to come because everyone here is fantastic.”
Jean, whose husband, Terry, has cancer added: “It is so good for us to be able to come here and get out of the house and see people. The Hummingbird Centre is a place full of love and support and it is the most fulfilling place that I have been to in my life.”
The Hummingbird Centre is based at Grange Courtyard, Station Road in Launton. Thanks to a partnership with Alpha Cars, taxis can be arranged for guests to help with transport.
